Thousands of Roads (2007)
(Courtney R. Davis)
Bold and purposeful, irregular ebony shapes reach out to beckon the viewer in Thousands of Roads. The organic, asymmetrical current of these confident shapes draw the mind to the gestural forms of Asian calligraphy. In this series, artist Hyunmee Lee explores the sharp contrast of dark against light, a departure from her previous use of darker, more tonal
grounds. She embraces planned compositions, rather than relying upon traditional techniques of accidental achievements. Using an alternate controlled approach (of her own creation), she achieves the illusion of spontaneous traditional brushstrokes. Her paintings are built up of subtly colored and white backgrounds with a combination of bold and delicate strokes in earth and charcoal tones. The works in this series, such as Thousands of Roads, Seraphic Stone and Elysian Foot, explore the possibilities surrounding a single theme, each a passage or journey of its own. Fascinatingly, these paintings do not simply explore spatial depth, but also dimensional depth, as they expand laterally and dimensionally, encouraging the viewer both to experience and to explore.
