90 Days of Improvisation (2005)
90 Days of Improvisation. (2005)
(Courtney R. Davis)
In 2005, Hyunmee Lee impressively created a series of 90 paintings in 90 days. These works, which measure 12 x 12 inches, were displayed at the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art in the exhibition, When Gesture Finds Its Power, curated by Frank McEntire. In this series, Lee explored improvisation and spontaneous gesture, balanced by intention and deliberation. In many ways a test of endurance, Lee’s work for this series incorporates elements of performance. The constraints of production and process, structured by the order of linear time, form a counterbalance to spontaneous and expressive mark making. In its deliberation and controlled impulse, 90 Days of Improvisation relates to the practice of meditation, a recurrent theme in the work of Hyunmee Lee.
